The Pompidou Center Acquires Jill Magid's Hand-Hacked Bouquet 1

Artwrld is pleased to announce the acquisition of Jill Magid’s Hand-Hacked Bouquet 1 from her upcoming collection Out-Game Flowers by the Pompidou Center for its permanent collection.

The acquisition of this NFT by Magid is part of a larger set of works acquired by the Pompidou Center that deal with the relationships between blockchain and artistic creation and marks the first time the Pompidou Center has added NFTs to its permanent collection.

This enrichment is part of the strategy of the National Museum of Modern Art, which since its founding, has supported artists in the conquest of new means of creation. It is the result of joint work with the scientific teams and the administration of the Ministry of Culture.

The blockchain has considerably marked the ecosystem of digital art in terms of both the production and the circulation of works. The research carried out by the National Museum of Modern Art on this phenomenon has made it possible to build an ambitious acquisition plan for the “new media” collection, which since its creation by the Center Pompidou in 1977, has been dedicated to observing the artistic uses of emerging technologies.

It is less a question of being interested in the cultural phenomenon of “collectibles”, collections of images sold as NFTs, than it is to explore the most audacious creative uses of this technology, engaging in a singular reflection on the ecosystem of the crypto-economy and its impact on the definitions and contours of the work of art, the author or the author, of the collection and the receiving public.

How do NFTs fit into art history? — Many pre-existing concerns in art history reappear in the context of blockchain. For example, some works (in this acquisition) explore copyright and legal issues, such as Jill Magid, who works on the idea of ownership and the intertwining of emotional, symbolic, and financial values on the web.
