Gê Viana is a Brazilian visual artist working in collage, sound, video and installation to explore material culture, oral history and syncretism within the African diaspora across Brazil. Her practice moves between domestic, urban and rural spaces and blends analog and digital collage with painting and early twentieth-century photographic processes. Her work challenges the accuracy of traditional archives, filling gaps in institutional memory with evocative images and sounds that convey the fullness of Afro-Brazilian identity and heritage. For "Hammer Projects: Gê Viana," her first institutional presentation in the United States, she presents an installation and new sculpture along with her short film "Radiola de promessa" (2025), which documents everyday life in rural Maranhão, her home state in northeast Brazil, and explores how reggae music weaves together the region's cultural memory.
