Herb Ritts (1952โ2002) was an American fashion photographer and music video director known for his photographs of celebrities, models and other cultural figures in the 1980s and 1990s. Born in Brentwood, Los Angeles, to a furniture designer and an interior designer, he grew up next door to Steve McQueen. Working mainly in black-and-white, he used classical form, sculptural posing, simplified backgrounds and California light, often in the manner of classical Greek sculpture, to turn his subjects into archetypes. His work is featured in Fahey/Klein Gallery's "The School of Los Angeles."
