Josh Smith
Josh Smith (b. 1976) is a New York–based American artist known for his prolific, experimental practice across painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage. Originally trained as a printmaker, Smith gained attention in the early 2000s with paintings incorporating his own name as a central motif. His work often explores recurring symbols like palm trees, fish, skeletons, and the Grim Reaper, rendered in expressive brushwork and vibrant color. Born in Japan and raised in Tennessee, Smith challenges ideas of authorship and repetition in art. His work is held in major collections including MoMA and the Centre Pompidou, and he has exhibited widely across the U.S. and Europe.
