Liu Xiaodong

Liu Xiaodong (b. 1963, Jincheng, China) is a leading figure of Chinese New Realism, painting on-site portraits of communities shaped by displacement, labor, and rapid change. From Three Gorges workers to migrants along contested borders, his large-scale canvases treat painting as fieldwork. He lives in Beijing and teaches at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
