Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden is an American painter known for pioneering the “Pop Surrealism” or “Lowbrow” art movement. Born in 1963 in Medford, Oregon, and raised in Southern California, Ryden blends classical painting techniques with surreal, dreamlike imagery. His work often juxtaposes innocence and the macabre—featuring wide-eyed children, meat, religious iconography, and nostalgic Americana—to explore themes of beauty, consumerism, and spirituality. A Pasadena Art Center College of Design graduate, Ryden has exhibited globally, with acclaimed shows like The Meat Show and The Gay 90’s. His meticulously detailed, hauntingly whimsical style has influenced a generation of contemporary artists and blurred the line between fine art and pop culture.
