Marlon Mullen

Marlon Mullen (born 1963, Richmond, California) is an American painter whose work transforms the visual language of magazines, museum catalogs, and exhibition announcements into richly layered abstract compositions. A longtime artist at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, he meticulously recreates printed layouts by hand, flattening text and imagery into bold fields of color, pattern, and gesture. His paintings explore perception, language, and representation while challenging distinctions between insider and outsider art. Mullen’s work has gained major international recognition in recent years. He has exhibited at institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; and White Columns, New York. His paintings have also been featured at major fairs and biennials, and are held in prominent public and private collections.
