Join us for an evening with pioneering photographer Coreen Simpson, in conversation with Michael Famighetti of Aperture. Coreen Simpson (b. 1942, New York) is a Brooklyn-based photographer and jewelry designer whose five-decade career has shaped contemporary visual culture. Her work has appeared in Essence, The New York Times, The Village Voice, and Vogue, and is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Bronx Museum, Le Musée de la Photographie (Belgium), and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Her new monograph—the second title in Aperture’s Vision & Justice Book Series—brings together defining bodies of work, from her B-Boys series on early hip-hop youth culture to her experiments in collage, portraiture, and form, revealing a singular approach to image-making, style, and cultural authorship guided by what she calls following “the blood beats.” She is joined by Michael Famighetti, Editor in Chief of Aperture, whose leadership since the magazine’s 2013 relaunch has helped define its contemporary voice. He is a recipient of a National Magazine Award for General Excellence and, with Sarah Lewis, the ICP Infinity Award for the “Vision & Justice” issue. Together, Simpson and Famighetti share stories, reflections, and behind-the-scenes moments from a singular career—marking the publication of a landmark monograph and an enduring artistic legacy.
