Eliel, Senior Curator Emerita of Modern Art, and artist Mary Weatherford discuss David Smith's seldom-seen Spray paintings, celebrating the opening of 'Night Window: David Smith Spray Paintings, 1958–1964' at Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood. Long considered the sculptor most closely associated with abstract expressionism, Smith (1906–1965) sculpted by day and worked on canvas and paper by night. In the Sprays, negative space becomes structure, color becomes atmosphere, absence becomes subject. Conversation 6–7 pm, followed by the opening reception 7–8 pm. Free; reservations recommended.
