Alberto Valdés, Untitled, c. 1971
Alberto Valdés's "A Beginning" gathers paintings from about 1950 to 1994, from oil and gold-leaf panels of Coatlicue, a blue warrior and a golden fish to abstract masonite works and acrylics on Arches paper. Blending Mesoamerican imagery with mid-century modernism and moving between figuration and abstraction, the work draws on his Mexican-American heritage to explore history, mysticism, nature and ancestral memory.
