Nieves González: A Friendship Story

Richard Heller Gallery Los Angeles · Westside
Exhibition on view: Jun 20, 2026 - Jul 25, 2026

Nieves González's A Friendship Story considers friendship between women as a profound structure of human experience, as ancient and enduring as anything we have chosen to call sacred.

The phrase “amiga, date cuenta” (“sister, wake up”), which circulates today through text messages, Instagram stories, and conversations over coffee where relationships are weighed and decisions made, belongs to a much longer history. It is the same impulse that once led women to write one another in code, share rooms, and build communities at the margins of what was permitted. Sisterhood has always existed. We are fortunate to practice it now without apology.

The works gathered here do not simply depict friendship. They inhabit it. Amazons, Cephalophores, and Embraces take center stage in a narrative that invites us to recognize a form of knowledge both ancient and contemporary: that being together, with all its complexity, distance, tenderness, and misunderstanding, is itself a way of sustaining and defending life.
