In A passing shadow and a vanishing cloud, Israeli-born Brooklyn-based artist Avital Burg presents still life paintings rooted in duration: she gathers wildflowers, weeds, and branches from streets between her home and studio, arranges them, then paints those same arrangements from life over weeks, recording their gradual decay. Layers of oil accumulate, dried fragments fold back into fresh pigment, and the subject continues to change as the painting is made. Through this durational process, the paintings hold traces of time within the fixed surface of the canvas.
