Pipo Nguyen-duy: AsSimulation explores cultural assimilation through staged black-and-white self-portraits that reinterpret Renaissance and Baroque art. Using theatrical Asian visual language, he interrogates race, gender, and identity, placing himself in both Western and Vietnamese contexts to deconstruct and reconstruct alternative histories for Vietnamese-Americans. The works challenge tradition, gender norms, and cultural narratives through intimate, performative reenactments.
