beauty/violence: aria by Carol Zou is the first in a series exploring how classical music is used to manipulate public space. The installation includes video of sites using music to deter loitering, embroidered maps on sound panels, altered surveillance speakers, and a musical score linking violence, media, capital, and aesthetics. It also features signage taken from a luxury complex encroaching on a refugee neighborhood, critiquing art’s ties to gentrification, race, and housing politics.
