Blackbird qua Blackbird presents two groups of paintings by Jonathan Allmaier: dense abstractions and intimate landscapes made from views outside his studio and in Bronx Park. Working slowly and often crafting his own pigments and supports, Allmaier lets materials and unconventional tools shape the mark-making process. Across both bodies of work, painting becomes a form of thinking, where perception, material, and image develop together over time.
