White Cube is pleased to present ‘Ukuphuthelwa’, an exhibition of new works by South African artist Cinga Samson. Contending with the limits of representation, the paintings in ‘Ukuphuthelwa,’ – which translates to ‘Not being able to sleep’ in Samson’s native language of isiXhosa – grapple with irresolvable questions of the metaphysical and the existential, as well as ideas of mortality and the sublime. With a sombre palette of muted tones and eerie landscapes rendered in gentle silhouette, Samson’s paintings portray subjects and scenes that possess an unusual autonomy.
