Civil Commitment presents the first collaboration between Chris Kraus and Juliana Halpert, merging visual and written investigations rooted in personal histories and overlooked rural communities. Kraus traces a fictional crime in Minnesota through research artifacts tied to her past, while Halpert documents her mother’s career as a Vermont public defender. Both artists examine how memory, place, and class shape experience, crafting narratives from scattered details and lived proximity.
