Swiss Institute presents Close-Up, Deborah-Joyce Holman’s first U.S. institutional exhibition, which examines representation politics of racialized and gendered subjects. A single-channel 16 mm film follows a Black actress in a modernist home, performing everyday actions in close-up. The film resists narrative transparency, emphasizing subtle gestures and structural violence. Through repetition and textured imagery, Holman explores Black feminine agency beyond conventional frameworks of visibility and repair.
