Mary Ellen Bartley: Color Anthology presents photographs from her Reading November series (2013–2021), in which stacked and grouped found books are transformed from conveyors of information into objects of abstraction. The books were selected specifically for their top-stain — a decorative feature on the head of the book block popular from the 1940s through the 1960s — sourced from bargain bins at secondhand stores in Long Island and Vermont. Photographed at dusk with flat light and long exposures, the arrangements embrace winter's somber encroachment, evoking color field painting and minimalism while elevating everyday vessels of knowledge into timeless elements of poetic form.
