Counter/Surveillance examines the roots of today’s surveillance technologies, tracing their evolution from Cold War-era tools used by spies, police, and border guards. It reveals how facial recognition, biometrics, and other tactics emerged and spread globally, often through imitation and exchange. The exhibition also highlights how artists, activists, and dissidents have long resisted these methods—repurposing tools to expose, subvert, and reclaim control from systems of watchfulness.
