Creating Light presents late works by Los Angeles-based Austrian painter Hubert Schmalix, mostly produced in 2024 as the artist reflected on a life lived across Europe, Asia, and California. Chalets, mountains, forests, hills and flowers appear in a colorful, deliberate flat style, with a Pop Art directness that’s tempered by expressive line and brushed color. Schmalix’s works glow with intelligence, humor, and pictorial sensitivity, inviting a conversation across the picture plane. "I'm not a painter who paints the light," Schmalix said. "I create light through color. This is what defines painting."
