Off Paradise presents Maximilian Schubert: Dissolves. Maximilian Schubert’s work often straddles the boundaries between painting and sculpture. The luminous “canvases” that make Untitled (Dissolve), (2025- ), his newest series, are cast urethane resin objects—hybrids of painting and sculpture that refuse to cohere into one or the other. Employing the old master technique of glazing where thin layers of paint impart color, depth and luminosity to a surface, Schubert creates works composed entirely of layer upon layer of poured, translucent polyurethane.

Maximilian Schubert (b. 1983, Rockford, IL) is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work challenges the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Using materials like translucent polyurethane, fiberglass, and resin, he creates wall-mounted pieces that resemble paintings but behave as sculptural objects. His process involves casting, glazing, and layering surfaces to explore gesture, absence, and illusion. Referencing both classical and modern art histories, Schubert reimagines the painted surface as a site of material and conceptual depth. He holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited at Off Paradise (NY), Jacob Bjorn (Denmark), and other international venues.
