Jiajia Zhang: Domestic News transforms the gallery into a cylindrical mirror chamber housing five synchronized videos that open onto contemporary Shanghai — traffic, LED advertising, architecture at night, GPS systems, and quieter scenes of waiting and eating. Seated on motorcycle saddles, viewers enter a rotating field of images where interior and exterior constantly exchange. A script drawing on memoir, reportage, and political theory runs parallel to the footage, while a rendition of Gong Xi Gong Xi — composed during Japanese occupation and since recast as a New Year anthem — anchors historical trauma within civic optimism. Presented in New York, the installation places two imperial cities in quiet dialogue.
