This exhibition examines empire as an accumulated residue embedded in images, circulation, and perception. Drawing on strategies associated with the Pictures Generation, the works use appropriation to question image distribution and identity formation in mass media. Works by Louise Lawler, Cindy Sherman, Richard Prince, and emerging artists Nicholas Sullivan, Valentina Vaccarella, and Sam Lipp consider how images persist, distort, and accrue meaning after their original authority recedes.
