Artist(s)

Julius Eastman
Glenn Ligon
A pairing of works by experimental composer Julius Eastman (1940–1990) and artist Glenn Ligon (b. 1960) highlights their shared exploration of identity and expression. Central to the exhibition is an installation of four pianos, including three self-playing Yamaha Disklaviers that perform Eastman’s Evil Nigger hourly. Ligon contributes a neon sculpture inspired by Toni Morrison’s Jazz and Sparse Shouts (for Julius Eastman), where neon words blink in sync with Eastman’s Prelude to the Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc.
