Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California traces how quilt-making moved and evolved during the Second Great Migration. As African Americans relocated westward from 1940 to 1970, quilts served both practical and emotional roles—carried as heirlooms and reimagined as expressions of memory, kinship, and creativity. Featuring 100 works by nearly 80 artists, the exhibition honors these makers and highlights quilts as vital works of art and cultural heritage.
