Joy Makon: In Bloom presents watercolor landscapes and still lifes drawn from daily observation — floral subjects from Brooklyn streets and the artist's own garden, rendered in richly detailed convergences of light, texture, and color. Heavy spring blossoms throw shadows against building facades, their shapes as energetic to Makon as the trees themselves. Floral still lifes touch on the passage of time and the beauty that intensifies through age. "After such a harsh winter," Makon says, "the arrival of warmer weather just revives me" — and the paintings offer, above all, a moment of respite.
