Wang Yeul: Walking Through Utopia

Shatto Gallery Los Angeles · Mid-City
Exhibition on view: Jun 27, 2026 - Jul 10, 2026

In Walking through Utopia, Korean abstract landscape painter Wang Yeul draws from and interrogates East Asian philosophical and painterly traditions to redefine utopia as a mode of perception rather than a distant fantasy. His large-scale gestural paintings, dominated by saturated colors and loose sweeping strokes achieved with traditional bamboo brushes, serve as meditations on emptiness found in East Asian philosophy. These hazy, fluid landscapes challenge the notion of utopia as a fixed endpoint, proposing it instead as an ephemeral state of consciousness. By leaving the canvas open with intentional space for interpretation, Wang invites audiences to map their own utopias and bring personal emotional colors to the exhibition.
