Zanele Muholi's Faces and Phases 19 at Southern Guild, Los Angeles, continues a 19-year photographic journey capturing Black lesbian, bisexual, Queer, Trans, and gender non-conforming individuals. Initially focused on South Africa, the project has expanded globally, offering an evolving, living archive that confronts colonial narratives, systemic violence, and identity politics. Through powerful, direct gazes, the portraits affirm dignity, resilience, and self-expression, celebrating the beauty of Black Queer lives.
