Jakub Tomáš's Five String Serenade, his second solo show at Asya Geisberg, presents new oil paintings that begin as small paper models lit like stage sets, pieced together from internet imagery and memory. Drawing on Cubism, Czech puppetry, Carnival masks, and stop-motion animation, the uncanny scenes show people fiddling with odd motors, playing guitar outdoors, socializing, and kissing, poised between the familiar and the absurd.
