FLW is an exhibition of new work by Carrie Schneider that expands upon an eight-second sequence from Chris Marker's moving image La Jetée, in which Hélène Châtelain awakens. Schneider rephotographed each frame from a pirated clip on her handheld phone onto Super 16mm film, projecting it fourteen feet wide as a three minute loop. The whirring celluloid reveals the reanimated face of Châtelain, which once again crackles with life. FLW is installed four thousand miles from its companion piece, First Living Woman, in La Biennale di Venezia—a monumental, one-kilometer-long photograph that snakes across three steel tiers stacked to the ceiling, with each still frame of Châtelain’s awakening exposed directly to its substrate.
