Kara Walker’s Fortuna and the Immortality Garden (Machine) examines power, trauma, and transformation through automatons engaged in perpetual ritual and struggle. Inspired by sources ranging from antique dolls to Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, the installation features figures set within black obsidian, evoking spirituality and renewal. At its center, Fortuna interacts with visitors, offering printed fortunes as gestures of reflection, absolution, and hope.
