This installation by Kara Walker examines power, memory, and the memorialization of trauma through mechanized figures and symbolic materials. Drawing on historical iconography, literature, and ritual, the work presents automatons engaged in cyclical actions within a field of obsidian. An interactive figure responds to viewers with gestures and printed messages, framing technology as a vessel for reflection, belief, and transformation.
