Fugue Zones explores the complex relationship between sound as a tool of the military-industrial complex and as a medium of resistance within marginalized communities. The exhibition is a collaboration between artists DeForrest Brown Jr., Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste, and Dr. Steve Goodman (Kode9), who adapt the musical structure of a fugue - where a central theme is repeated through different instruments - as a framework to layer installation, live performance, and audio technologies to create a new body of work. From military sonic cannons used for crowd control to subwoofers reflective of underground sound system culture, Fugue Zones investigates the dual nature of sound as both a means of control and a tool for cultural reclamation.
