Gimme Shelter

Art Cake New York · Brooklyn
Exhibition on view: Jun 6, 2026 - Jun 27, 2026

Gimme Shelter takes its title from the Rolling Stones' dark 1969 masterpiece — a cautionary song about impending dystopia that feels, the curator writes, as prescient today as ever. Centering on Rebecca Smith's sculpture and expanding into a wild, deliberately uncomfortable group show, the exhibition refuses easy curatorial solutions or answers, posing questions for which there may be none. Artists were chosen in part for their relationship to found, recycled, or nontraditional materials — practices that become forms of denunciation against authoritarianism, predatory wealth accumulation, and environmental catastrophe. What remains is a fragile glimmer of hope: the impossible act of continuing to make work against all odds.
