Tristan Unrau: Hopes and Fears

David Kordansky Gallery Los Angeles · Mid-City
Exhibition on view: Mar 19, 2026 - Apr 25, 2026

Hopes and Fears presents new paintings by Tristan Unrau across three gallery spaces. In his first exhibition with the gallery, Unrau works across varied styles and art historical references, combining source imagery, including material generated with diffusion models, into hybrid compositions. The paintings examine authorship, perception, and the role of style in contemporary painting.

Tristan Unrau

Tristan Unrau (b. 1989, Brampton, Canada) is a Los Angeles-based painter whose work defies the expectation that an artist must have a singular, recognizable style. Drawing on Romanticism, Realism, Post-Impressionism, and Expressionism — as well as cartoonish figuration, Golden Age portraiture, and photographic hyperrealism — each canvas stands on its own terms, with voice belonging as much to the painting as to the painter. Unrau holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and an MFA from UCLA. He is represented by Sebastian Gladstone and David Kordansky Gallery.
