In the life is an exhibition of new paintings by Aya Brown that present an intimate record of Black community life in New York City—drawn from family photographs, personal archives, and people within her immediate circles. Known for her 2020 Essential Workers Series, Brown pushes against the historic flattening and exclusion of Black lesbian life, creating space for complexity, humor, and tenderness.
