Instant Theatre explores the experimental theatre movement founded by Rachel Rosenthal in 1955 and continued with her husband, King Moody, from 1956-1966. Their performances were completely improvised, free in form, rooted in Zen Buddhism and Artaud, and seldom documented. This exhibition reconstitutes these ephemeral events for the present through archival material, a reimagined theatre set, original props, and mask figures that suggest an audience communing across time. Situated historically as a precursor to the performance art of the 1960s and 1970s, Instant Theater spotlights Rosenthal as a powerful artist force in her own right.
