Abstract art by self-taught artists emerges through invention rather than dialogue with art history. Working without reference to established models, these artists develop nonrepresentational forms as a primary visual language. Limited access to materials often leads to the use of found objects or unconventional supports, while repetitive marks on paper or canvas translate personal emotional and physical states through intuitive, non-objective processes.
