Izumi Kato’s new exhibition pairs suspended and freestanding sculptures with paintings built from canvases of varying sizes. In oil, cast aluminum, plastic models, fabric and wood, his signature hitogata, or humanoid figures, appear at once primordial and futuristic, now with frog-like legs, mermaid tails and sea life drawn from his love of fishing, blurring the line between painting and sculpture.
