NANZUKA UNDERGROUND presents ShimiShimiKao!, Kenny Scharf’s second solo exhibition with the gallery. Emerging from New York’s East Village scene alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, Scharf has spent nearly five decades transforming pop culture, humor, and anxiety into vibrant worlds of animated forms. The exhibition centers on his new ShimiShimiKao! paintings, inspired by stains that resemble faces, alongside works from his MOODZ and Dire Headlines series. Beneath their exuberant energy lies a deeper impulse: Scharf’s enduring belief that imagination can confront fear, from nuclear threats to environmental crisis, and transform uncertainty into possibility.
