In Set the Atmosphere, Kwamé Azure Gomez presents layered paintings shaped by memories of Black worship and queer nightlife. Figures emerge and dissolve within dense fields of color, echoing liturgical dance and ballroom movement. Repeated wiping and repainting builds charged, shifting spaces where music, gesture, and spirituality converge. Personal symbols—apples, numbers, letters—encode family history, turning painting into an act of remembrance and presence.
