Late Medieval European Blockbooks: The First Printed Picture Book examines a brief period in European book history when blockbooks circulated alongside manuscripts and early printed books. Produced entirely from woodcuts, blockbooks combined image and text on a single surface and encouraged experimentation in visual storytelling and book production. Drawing on the Morgan’s collection, the exhibition considers the rise and decline of this format within the early history of printing.
