León Birbragher Vinkel: Life Is a Barranquilla Carnival

Coral Gables Museum Miami

This exhibition brings a sample of Colombia's largest cultural festival, the Barranquilla Carnival, to South Florida through a collection of photographs by León Birbragher Vinkel documenting over 30 years of the festival's main events and folkloric expressions. The show features original costumes, videos, and music, providing a multisensory experience that traces the Carnival's journey from the pre-Carnival Guacherna parade through major events like the Batalla de Flores and Gran Parada de Comparsas, concluding with Joselito's Burial. Declared a UNESCO Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2003, the exhibition celebrates the Carnival's role as a symbol of Caribbean identity blending African, Indigenous, and European traditions, while also recognizing its continuation in the diaspora through Miami's annual Carnaval de Barranquilla celebrations.
