Machine Age Noise presents works by Morris Graves produced at the two homes he designed and built in Washington State between 1940 and 1957. Graves strived endlessly for transcendence while obsessively cultivating the solitude it required. His homes, gardens, and way of living were as much a part of his practice as painting itself. Birds, serpents, and vessels carry the weight of war, imprisonment, and an almost antisocial commitment to spiritual life. The exhibition closes with the sumi-e abstractions that bear the title: noise that finally breached the walls.
