Combining watercolor and Japanese paper collage, María Berrío creates vivid tableaux that merge impressions drawn from myths and folktales with contemporary experiences of adversity, determination and triumph. For her debut solo presentation with Hauser & Wirth, and her first exhibition in New York since 2017, Berrío will unveil new large-scale works on canvas that portray environments and characters that are unknown yet familiar. Imbued with a riotous spirit, Berrío’s expressive surfaces and layered pictorial architectures evoke societies in states of flux. Through her unrelenting attention to the poetic minutiae of everyday lives, Berrío continues to illuminate connections between present day realities and the expansive territories of memory, tradition and history.
