ICA Miami presents the first major US museum exhibition for Japanese ceramicist Masaomi Yasunaga. His emotive, highly textured works reinterpret modern avant-garde ceramics through a radically contemporary approach. Trained in the Sodeisha movement tradition, Yasunaga creates ceramics using hand-building techniques with unconventional mixtures of glazes, minerals, rocks, metals, and glass powders. The exhibition comprises recent works and a site-specific installation, showcasing his innovative approach to material transformation where forms are buried in sand or porcelain during firing and excavated afterward, likening the process to archaeological excavation.
