Anton Roland Laub: Mobile Churches in Ceausescu’s Bucharest

The Wende Museum Los Angeles · Westside
Exhibition on view: Apr 25, 2026 - Oct 11, 2026

Mobile Churches examines the transformation of Bucharest during the 1980s under Nicolae Ceausescu’s urban restructuring, which erased much of the historic center to build monumental state architecture. Several churches avoided destruction by being physically moved and concealed behind apartment blocks. Combining contemporary photographs with archival material, the project documents this little-known episode of political planning and its lingering traces within the city’s landscape and memory.
