Monica Ikegwu’s *Read in Red* presents 43 portraits painted almost entirely in shades of red, most of them small 5.5 × 4 inch oils on wood panel, alongside three larger canvases. By setting aside natural skin tones, Ikegwu asks viewers to see each sitter as a person rather than by race. Red’s range—from love to anger—and the subjects’ neutral expressions leave space for viewers’ own associations, exploring identity and perception.
