1969 Gallery is pleased to announce Parallax: Traversing Image and Text, curated by Pasha Smelyantsev and Hengzhi Huang Yang. The group exhibition explores different angles of seeing and representing the world — through images, impressions, abstractions, symbols, and texts — while standing prior to the wonted place that's troubled with fixed interpretations and singular answers. A survey of the constellation of innovative formal experiments in visual languages by emerging New York artists, the show invites viewers to experience the transformation from new renderings of traditional portraits to symbolic paintings centering internet culture and the mechanicality of Pop Art to calligraphic works of poetry and essay on canvas — a journey through a kind of semiotic gradient. Featuring additional installations, sound projects, and a special curation of books and magazines, Parallax at 1969 Gallery presents a space of inquiry into how we encode and decode the contemporary.
